Placing Base Cabinets

Now that we have an example of each kind of cabinet we need (both a base and a wall cabinet), let's start copying and pasting them where we need them. But ... we don't have any corner cabinets.

Why do we care? Well, have you ever had a large corner cabinet with (for example) a "lazy Susan" inside? If not, then you'll have to trust me. You want to put corner cabinets in the corners, unless your cabinets don't turn the corner.

Making a Corner Cabinet

To make a corner cabinet, select the base cabinet tool and click in a corner, fairly close to the point where the two walls meet. For example, click just inside the upper left hand corner of the kitchen. If you click in the right spot, a corner cabinet should be constructed. It's shown, below:

But it appears that our changes have not been applied to this cabinet. That's right, we need to open its dialog box and make those changes. I won't detail them, since we're mostly just repeating changes we've already made. So, change the corner cabinet settings to match the other cabinet we made, and also make a copy of it to place in the other corner (the upper right hand corner) of the kitchen. I also made the door a diagonal door, mostly because I could.

Remember how to copy an object? Select the object to be copied, click on the Copy/Paste tool, and then click where you want the object copy to be made. But, the modified corner cabinet is shown below.

Placing Other Cabinets

Now, we can begin to place cabinets. Though I initially said we would be working with 36" cabinets, as it turns out (just goes to show you what happens when you don't plan ahead), none of the cabinets are 36" except the island. Two images illustrating my layout are below.

Here is the inventory of cabinet shapes/sizes:

• 2 - 36" Lazy Susan corner cabinets w/diagonal doors.
• 2 - 24" Cabinets (one on either side of the cabinet in front of the window).
• 1 - 42" Cabinet w/double doors that will receive a sink, placed in front of the window. The drawer will likely be a "fake" drawer.
• 1 - 30" Cabinet w/double doors, along the left-hand wall.
• 1 - 18" Cabinet, placed on the right hand side end (next to where the refrigerator will go).
• 1 - 36" Cabinet along the left-hand wall, behind the peninsula.
• 1 - 24" Peninsula cabinet.
• 1 - 36" Peninsula cabinet that will receive our cook top.

Above we see the base cabinets, and below is the plan view also showing the sizes and placement. It was no (mere) accident that I chose a width for the kitchen that would permit nice, evenly sized cabinets. The 3' space along the right hand wall is for the refrigerator, which I have not placed, yet.

I know this is stopping right in the middle of doing our kitchen, but this where I am, right now, so this will have to do.
